The story of Neena Belliappa’s missing jewellery
When Neena Belliappa, a resident of Jayalakshmipuram in Mysore, recently complained to the police that her jewellery valued at Rs 10 lakh was missing from her bank locker, it raised many eyebrows because Neena is the mother of India’s highest paid corporate executive.
Neena’s daughter Kaveri (in picture above) is married to Kalanithi Maran of Sun TV Network Ltd.
Sun TV Network Ltd paid promoters Kalanithi Maran and his wife, Kaveri Kalanithi, Rs. 128.8 crore (Rs. 64.4 crore each) remuneration in the year ended March, nearly double what they got the previous year. The Marans were already considered the highest-paid executives in corporate India when they earned about Rs. 74 crore (Rs. 37 crore each) in 2009-10.
Kalanithi Maran, chairman and managing director (CMD), and Kaveri Kalanithi, joint managing director (JMD), own a 77% stake in the company. The couple also own Spicejet airline.
Even as the police hit a dead-end in the investigation following the complaint made on June 5, in an unexpected development, Neena informed the police on June 18 that the ‘missing’ jewellery was found at her apartment.
Neena was quoted telling the police: “”The lapse has occurred due to my memory loss, for which I regret. All my jewellery worth Rs. 10 lakh was found at my residence itself.”
Apparently, Neena had kept the jewellery under her bed and forgot about it. The Mysore police are planning to close the case.
Neena’s late husband Jammada A. Belliappa (Bolli), hailing from Kaikery near Gonikoppal in Kodagu, was an insurance executive based at Chennai, where Kaveri met Kalanithi at a friend’s place and got married in 1991. The Marans have a daughter Kaviya.
