www.coorgtourisminfo.com campaign impact: Work starts on Hunsur-Gonikoppal Road
Work on the Hunsur-Gonikoppal road has commenced. During the past couple of weeks, work on the road has been going on from Kalbetta, near Hunsur, the point where the road bifurcates – one going towards Kushalanagar and another to Thithimathi.
It is not just patch work and filling up of the potholes. They are relaying the road. Besides, work is on to broaden the road. It is learnt that work is not progressing at the desired speed, due to limited earth-moving equipment available with the contractor. The on-going work will come to an end once the monsoon sets in June. Unless the contractor hires more equipment, the work on the 45-km stretch road will not be completed by the year end.
Work was in progress on Wednesday night when this reporter was passing by on a bus. However, the workers had taken a break on Thursday for Ugadi festival.
Motorists, especially those using cars, are advised not to take this road as the road has been dug up in many stretches. It is risky to take the road in the night as the contractor has not bothered to install reflectors or barricades to warn motorists about work being in progress.
It may be recalled that though Speaker Bopaiah and Kodagu in-charge minister Appachu Ranjan were initially buying time on the commencement of work on the road, they finally got the work started due to the incessant campaign against the delay launched by this portal and also due to the direction issued by Karnataka Governor Hans Raj Bhardhaj, following a memorandum submitted on behalf of this portal.
