FIRST GENETIC STUDY: MY BOOK ON THE ORIGIN OF KODAVAS (COORGS) IS TAKING FINAL SHAPE

By P.T. Bopanna
My book on the origin of Kodavas (Coorgs) in Karnataka is taking final shape. For generations, the foremost question on the minds of Kodavas has been on their origin.
A team of scientists in the country have succeeded in obtaining key genetic insights into this enigma. The scientists discovered that the Coorgs are actually composed of three different genetic clusters which reflects a deep and complex demographic history of the Kodavas.
One group Coorg1 (2000 years old) which exhibits a strong (70-80%) tribal genetic component may be considered the native, ancient backbone of the Kodavas.
Coorg3 has a unique early Bronze Age ancestry (3000 years) with connections to Middle Eastern and Indus Valley groups along with a contribution from an as yet unknown lineage. They show strong signs of genetic drift, having lived in isolation for a very long time, resulting in their genes becoming distinct from all neighbours. Coorg1 and Coorg3 eventually combined forming Coorg2 just around 330 years ago. Additionally, Sikh-Jatt and other northwest Indian groups are relatively recent additions to the population.
Through this study, it may be inferred that male Coorg ancestors may have shared genetic ties with Eurasian and Middle Eastern populations, according to Y-chromosome analysis, whereas female Coorg ancestors were primarily indigenous to South Asia.
The genetic origin of the Coorgs has been a topic of great interest not only to the members of that community but to anthropologists, sociologists, historians and fellow countrymen.
In summary, the study is a landmark in understanding South Indian ancestry, migrations, and population evolution. It also highlights India’s complex demographic history, with multiple ancient migrations and deeply divergent lineages.
I wish to record my appreciation and thanks to Coorg-born Prof Buttiyanda Kuttapa Thelma, a member of the genetic study team for helping me in putting together the book.
