TOP KODAVA (COORG) SCIENTIST ALSO DABBLES IN POETRY

Trupthi Devaiah (in picture) is a post-doctoral researcher at Uppasala University in Sweden.

She says writing poetry is a way to express oneself deeply, like it soothes the soul. The beauty of poetry is that it can break free from strict grammar rules. It allows you to play with words and condense big ideas and emotions into short, powerful phrases.

In a few lines, you can tell a whole story, paint a picture with words, or share a feeling in a way that feels more true than regular conversation. This poem is titled ‘Kodagu’, the name of her native district in Karnataka – P.T. Bopanna

Kodagu

A land of emerald hills veiled in mist so low

The dew drops on the coffee blooms glow,

The anemòs puff a fragrant welcome,

The waterfall cascades a tune.

A land with winding roads, unfurl views wonderful,

The dragonflies linger, paddy fields plentiful,

The spices whisper in the breeze,

The nature sings rustling secrets through the trees.

A land so small with the fame so tall,

The warrior clan with a heart of gold

The tales of bravery, a Kodava’s pride

The smiles that warm every soul

A land where rain brings life, the river flows serene,

The sunsets each day with hues unseen

The crickets chirp a symphony at night,

The fireflies, like stars, take flight.

Kodagu a heaven, a tranquil dream

The worries here fade and spirit gleam
