NEW COORG BOOK: ‘KODAVA RELIGION AT CROSSROADS’

NEW BOOK: ‘KODAVA RELIGION AT CROSSROADS’
Following the remarkable success of his book, ‘Are Kodavas (Coorgs) Hindus?’, author P.T. Bopanna presents another thought-provoking volume, titled ‘Kodava Religion At Crossroads.’ This is the eleventh book being brought out by journalist-turned author Bopanna.
With the Hindutva ideology taking deep roots in the Kodava community hailing from Kodagu (Coorg) district in Karnataka, Bopanna is worried that the Kodava way of life, which involves ancestor and nature worship, is being gradually replaced by Brahmanical Hinduism.
Bopanna feels Kodavas should be proud of their heritage and practice Kodavame, the Kodava way of life, practiced by their forefathers for generations.
The highlight of the book is an illuminating article on ‘Sanskritization and the Kodavas’ by Dr Sowmya Dechamma CC, Fulbright scholar, and Professor, Centre for Comparative Literature, University of Hyderabad.
Anu Chengappa, advocate, has contributed a well-researched article on the customary rights of a Kodava woman, with specific focus on matrimonial matters and property rights.
The foreword for the book has been penned by Dr Veena Poonacha, Retd. Director, Research Centre for Women’s Studies, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai.
Machimada M. Thimmaiah, a former economist and banker, and founder trustee of the Coorg Public School, Gonikoppal, Kodagu, has written a chapter on ‘Kodavas: The Way Forward’.
Subbaiah Kadyamada Ganapathi, a film-maker, has written on how the astrologers have started calling the shots when it comes to fixing matrimonial alliances among the Kodavas.
The cover has been designed by Bhakti Saraswat-Devaiah. The book is dedicated to the late Maj Gen Codanda K. Karumbaya, who had written extensively on matters relating to Kodagu. Promoting scientific temper among the Kodavas was the focus of his writings.
