AUTHOR OF ‘FEATHERED JEWELS OF COORG’ AND HIS HAND-PAINTED CARDS TO MARK WILDLIFE WEEK

By P.T. Bopanna

I was pleasantly surprised to receive hand-painted cards featuring birds from Dr S.V. Narasimhan (in picture), well-known bird watcher from Kodagu (Coorg) in Karnataka.

In the past, Dr Narasimhan, author of the celebrated book “Feathered Jewels of Coorg” used to regularly send me the cards to mark the Wildlife Week. However, in the last few years, I had not received the cards. Dr Narasimhan is a medical practitioner based in Virajpet town.

Dr Narasimhan is listed in the Limca Book of Records for his wildlife message cards sent free to recipients across the world. This year, he has sent hand-painted 2090 acrylic on paper cards. So far, he has sent 85,560 cards in the past 42 years.

His bilingual book beautifully documents the richness of the avifauna of Kodagu district. The book contains the descriptions and sketches of 305 species of birds along with synoptic notes of each family.

The main text contains brief description of each species with its common and scientific names in English, Kannada and Kodava languages.

Dr Narasimhan has been included in the Limca Record under the literature category for the ‘only book on birds authored and illustrated by same’.

He was selected ‘Coorg Person of the Year,2013’ in a poll conducted by www.coorgtourisminfo.com, Kodagu’s first news and tourism portal. Sharing the link below:
