BIRD-WATCHING: FEATHERED JEWELS OF COORG

By P.T. Bopanna
Dr S.V. Narasimhan (in picture), the author of the book “Feathered Jewels of Coorg” is a medical practitioner of Virajpet town in Kodagu (Coorg) district in Karnataka.
This bilingual book beautifully documents the richness of the avifauna of Kodagu district. The book contains the descriptions and sketches of 305 species of birds along with synoptic notes of each family. The initial chapters have a useful, concise and good general description of bird morphology, anatomy, migration, and tips for bird watching.
These details make the book more useful for a general reader. The main text contains brief description of each species with its common and scientific names in English, Kannada and Kodava languages.
He has been drawing and colouring greeting/ message cards since 1983 for promoting the cause of wildlife conservation.
Dr Narasimhan has been included in the Limca Record under the literature category for the ‘only book on birds authored and illustrated by same’.
He was selected ‘Coorg Person of the Year,2013’ in a poll conducted by www.coorgtourisminfo.com, Kodagu’s first news portal, promoted by journalist P.T. Bopanna.
