THIS FACEBOOK PAGE OF MINE IS ON ‘STEROIDS’

By P.T. Bopanna

I have a few groups and a dozen pages on Facebook. Most of my posts are serious in nature and cater to the residents of Kodagu (Coorg) district in Karnataka.

While most of my posts get moderate response, there is one page which behaves as though it is on steroids.

Among all my pages, coorgjewellery.in gets more viewers. I normally post a photo of a woman dressed in traditional Kodava sari once in a fortnight.

While my posts manage to get nearly a dozen ‘likes’ on most of the pages, invariably the number of ‘likes’ will be between 500 and one thousand per post on the Coorg jewellery page.

This shows that most of those on social media are only interested in ‘time-pass’ and less interested in serious news. Aware of the psychology of the netizens, Facebook tweaks the algorithm to drive the traffic on its ‘popular’ pages.
