NEW FASHION TREND: SILVER SHINE FOR KODAVA (COORG) JEWELLERY

By P.T. Bopanna
In keeping with changing trend, it has become a new fashion to customise the traditional Kodava gold jewellery into silver, says Chennapanda Naina Uthappa (in picture).
Naina, who has an MBA in HR and works for an educational institution, said: “As the generation moves into modernisation, it has now become a trend to customise the gold jewellery like Pathak, Jomaale and Kokkethathi in silver. Keeping the tradition in place and with the trend, the silver jewellery is gaining popularity among young generation of Kodavas.”
Moreover, she pointed out how silver jewellery holds special significance for Kodavas: “Silver jewellery holds a significant importance as much as gold jewellery in Kodava weddings. Peeche kathi – an ornamental dagger, Thodang – a silver girdle worn by the groom at the back of his waist to which an Odikathi is fixed which is used to chop down banana stumps to show the strength of Kodava men, Gejjethand – a sacred wand held by the groom which is made of ebony, adorned with silver and silver bells (gejje).
“The bride wears Kaal pilli, anklet, toe rings made of silver on her big day. Each has its auspicious importance which is unique.”
